DAWN AND DUSK (NOODLE SOUP)

Dawn and Dusk (Noodle Soup) (2022-25) is a film and an experimental abstract virtual reality painting, which was created using a photograph of my physical paint palette as a starting point. The photograph of the palette is imported into virtual reality and then mapped, traced, drawn and extrapolated from using Open Brush software.

The title Dawn and Dusk refers to the atmospheric lighting conditions in the rural setting that I see from my studio window. Dawn is the mirror version of Dusk, which is the same painting under different environmental settings. The Noodle Soup refers to both way this long-play meditative film can interact with our thought processes, and elements of its painterly composition that have noodle-like qualities.

This silent film unfolds at an ultra slow pace over 6 hours and 37 minutes, which I describe as a 'slow painting'. These 'slow paintings' are an attempt to ask for a different type of relationship with the viewer, one that is potentially more deliberate and lingering, and closer to traditional painting.

Scrolling down is recommended here to not only reveal a small selection of stills, but also clips taken from the film which was filmed in VR. Scrolling down also gives a small sense of the unfolding abstract narrative that is further supported through this graphic novel-like format. Full viewing of the film is available on request.
